She's Learning to Sew!

Last night I started teaching the 10 year old how to sew.  She LOOOOVES it!  In fact, this morning she woke up and sat right down at the sewing machine and has been sewing all day...um, yes, it's almost 3pm and she's still in her jammies - sewing.

We have some 9" square scraps from holiday rag quilts and table runners my mom made.  She decided to make little pillows for her grandma's for Easter.  She made them all on her own, AND they're reversible :O).  That was her idea, and I think it's so cute that she is exploring her creative side.

Here is the first side of her pillow...

She is making folded flowers, but instead of gluing the petals she is sewing them in place.  Here is the backside...
So fun!  Can't wait to see what else she comes up with...although, I'm hoping to have some machine time of my own sometime soon :O).

Kid Project Fail....Or Not??

We took a trip to the DI (local thrift store) the other evening.  The whole fam damily.  The kids had never been and thought it was AMAZING!  LOL!  I told them they couldn't buy any toys (since we saw a handful on display that we'd donated there).  The 3 year old found her way to the far corner and set up a town of 3 Barbie houses, a car, and a horse...it took me a solid 30 minutes to coax her away....who needs McDonald's playland anyway???  My 10 year old is getting quite the kick out of all of this crafting going on.  She picked out the above item for 75 cents with intentions of fixing it up for her own room.  It was filthy and - you can't see it in that picture - but it had globs of paint all down each side that needed to be sanded off.  She got to work this afternoon and sanded, primed, and painted.  She removed the metal piece and I threw it in the dishwasher.  She brought in her block tonight and was crushed when she pulled the metal out of the dishwasher and it was completely covered in RUST!  "You RUINED it MOM!!!"

We put it together anyway.  Dad walked passed and - without knowing the drama - exclaimed, "WOW!  I love it!"....
It may not be what she pictured for her bedroom, but I think it looks great on my mantel :O)...
So, what do you think...trash or treasure?

Speaking of finding AMAZING things at the thrift stores - have I got some fun posts coming up soon with all the junk I found to fix up!  SO FUN!!

Fruit Loops to Sand Art!

This is such a fun (and YUMMY) activity for kids! Start by having the kids separate the cereal by colors, and place them into ziplocs... Then give them rolling pins and let them crush away (you may want to put towels under the bags if your table isn't crappy.....I mean distressed like mine)...
Keep going until the loops are powdered...
And before you know it, you will have a rainbow of colored and edible "sand"....
Next you can choose to make pictures (like my kids did), or you can explore the endless possibilities of sand bottle art. Click HERE to see google images of so many fun ideas!
My kids first drew a pencil design. Then they filled in the spaces (one at a time) with glue...
My daughter's was inspired by the new show at Disneyland, "World of Color"...
We also really enjoyed watching YouTube videos of sand art performances. Click HERE to see those!
